PSTET vs CTET: What Actually Differs
10 August 2026
If you're aiming to teach in Punjab, you've probably run into both PSTET (Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test) and CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) and wondered whether you need one, the other, or both.
What they have in common
Both exams follow the same two-paper structure set by the NCTE framework:
- Paper 1 — for candidates who want to teach classes 1 to 5
- Paper 2 — for candidates who want to teach classes 6 to 8
Both papers cover Child Development & Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies (Paper 1) or the relevant subject content (Paper 2). If you've prepared thoroughly for one, you're most of the way to being ready for the other.
Where they actually differ
| PSTET | CTET | |
| Conducted by | Punjab School Education Board | CBSE, on behalf of NCTE |
| Qualifies you for | Punjab government school recruitment | CBSE-affiliated schools, KVS, NVS and central schools nationwide |
| Language paper options | Punjabi is compulsory as one language paper | Choice from a wider list of regional languages |
Should you take both?
If your goal is specifically Punjab's Master Cadre or ETT Cadre recruitment, PSTET is the one that actually matters for eligibility. Many of our own students still sit CTET as well, since it keeps a national-school option open and the extra preparation cost is small once you've covered the PSTET syllabus.
Our PSTET & CTET course prepares both papers together for exactly this reason.
